About Us
The Highlands Police Explorers is a youth career education program for young men and women between 14-17 years of age. Through experimental learning, the program promotes the conditions needed for growth and development. Participants gain insight into law enforcement as well as other public service oriented careers. Explorers will also develop life skills and build character through community service and hands-on experiences.
The Highlands Police Department conducts monthly explorer meetings and trainings on topics and skills such as: first aid, self-defense, criminal law, motor vehicle law, narcotics, motor vehicle stops, firearms safety, and community-oriented policing techniques.
Explorers who complete specific training courses will be eligible to participate in Ride-A-Longs with Highlands Police Department officers during their regular tour of duty. Explorers also participate in community events such as the annual Clam Festival, Twin Lights Bike Ride and parade details. The explorers are an integral part in assisting the Highlands Police Department maintain public safety during community events.
The success or failure of the Highlands Police Explorer program is measured through its participants. For this reason, the central quality that the post wishes to instill in its youth is professionalism. Explorers learn to become leaders in their communities and respectfully represent the Highlands Police Department.
Note: The explorer program is not a rehabilitation program. Teens with behavioral issues will not be accepted. Explorers are accepted into the program after a completed application is turned in, and a background check and interview is conducted.
