The Highlands Police Explorers participate in a multitude of activities geared towards law enforcement. A typical month with the Highlands Police Explorers is highlighted below:
- On the second Thursday of the month, the explorers conduct their monthly training which includes classroom and field experience such as water rescue, first aid, traffic stops and radio communications.
- On the fourth Thursday of the month, the explorers hold their monthly meeting which is run solely by the explorer officers. During meetings the explorers talk about topics such as good and welfare, fundraising, ride-alongs and other business that relates the the future of the post.
- The Explorer Ride Along Program gives explorers training in the field and experience they can use if they pursue a career in law enforcement. While on ride-alongs, explorers assist officer’s with radio communications, first aid calls and community policing. An explorer is eligible for ride-alongs once they are 16 years old and after receiving an EMR certification. While on ride-alongs, explorers are strictly there to observe.
- Explorers assist the Highlands Police Department with community events such as the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Twin Lights Bike Ride and Zombie Walk. During these events explorers assist with traffic posts, crowd control as well as assist officers with parking vehicles.
- Post 1900 Relies solely on fundraising every year to fund our trips, uniforms and training's and asks for no money from members of the post. Our fundraisers mostly occur during the summer. During the Highlands Clam Festival our post raffles off a prize which is announced at the end of the Clam Fest.\
- Field trips allow the explorers to learn more about law enforcement and criminal justice. Monmouth County Jail, NJ Law Enforcement Explorer Youth Academy & Monmouth County Communications Facility are some places that we have gone to educate explorers on all career options within law enforcement.
Highlands Police Explorers participate in many other activities, immersing them into law enforcement and preparing them to achieve their future goals.
